凯蒂·佩里在接受采访时表示，《Roar》是一首“自我激励的歌曲”，并告诉主持人这首歌曲是写给自己的，因为她是一个讨厌把事情都憋在心里的人，不能一吐为快的行为会让她很恼火。她还谈到，从上一张专辑发行后，她尝试了很多治愈自己的疗法，而这首单曲就是为了治疗情伤[4] 。
在单曲封面上，凯蒂·佩里没有继续沿用自己第二张专辑中的蓝色假发造型。她告诉记者，那个被称为“水果姐”的自己已经死了。凯蒂·佩里表示，有时候改变很困难，但是进化和改变对于一个艺术家来说是非常重要的。她还表示，自己需要一个即不会很卡通、也不会很漫画的新形象，而这个形象更多的是她自己[4] 。
