    About the Emmy Awards

    An Emmy Award, often referred to simply as the Emmy, is a television production award. Focused on entertainment for television, it is considered equivalent to the Academy Awards (for film) and the Grammy Awards (for music).

    A majority of Emmys are presented in various sectors of the American television industry. As such, the awards are presented in various area-specific ceremonies held annually throughout the year. In addition, International Emmys are awarded to recognize excellence in TV programming produced and initially aired outside the United States. The two ceremonies that usually receive the most media coverage are the Primetime Emmys and the Daytime Emmys, primarily recognizing excellence in American primetime2 and daytime entertainment programming, respectively.

    Three related but separate organizations present the Emmy Awards: the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS), the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS), and the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Each is responsible for administering a particular set of Emmy award shows.

    The first Emmy Awards, which were devoted solely to local Los Angeles programming, were held on January 25, 1949, at the Holly-wood Athletic Club. The Television Academy rejected 47 proposals before accepting the statuette designed by television engineer Louis McManus, whose wife served as its model. Each year, the R.S. Owens company in Chicago, which is also responsible for manufacturing the statuettes for Oscar, is charged with manufacturing the close to four hundred statuettes ordered for the Primetime Emmys. At first, the name was “Immy,” after the image-orthicon3 camera tube, which was instrumental in the development of television. “Immy” was feminized as “Emmy” to complement the design chosen for the statuette, which depicted a winged, idealized woman holding an atom.
