Sonnet 4

何航

Unthrifty loveliness,why dost thou spend
Upon thyself thy beauty's legacy?
Nature's bequest gives nothing,but doth lend,
And being frank,she lends to those are free.         4
Then,beauteous niggard,why dost thou abuse
The bounteous largess given thee to give?
Profitless usurer,why dost thou use
So great a sum of sums yet canst not live?          8
For having traffic with thyself alone,
Thou of thyself thy sweet self dost deceive,
Then how when nature calls thee to be gone:
What acceptable audit canst thou leave?             12
   Thy unused beauty must be tombed with thee,
   Which used,lives th'executor to be.

挥霍成性的可人，为什么你把
美的遗产好光在你的自身？
造化只出借却不会馈赠，
她生性慷慨也只出借慷慨之人。           4
那么美丽的吝啬鬼，你为什么滥用
造化托你转交的美丽的礼品？
无利可图的食利者啊，你为什么
挥霍了重金，却仍不能安生？             8
只因你仅仅和自己买卖经营，
你行骗也只骗了你甜蜜的自身。
那么当造化有一天唤走你的生命，
你怎能把满意的清单留于世人？            12
    何不如风流，让后代使你遗貌长依旧，
    不然你那未被垂顾之美只好殉葬荒丘。

注释：1 unthrifty loveliness呼语，诗人称呼自己的年轻朋友。
         unthrifty 浪费的
        loveliness美丽，美貌
        dost do的屈折变化形式，在一般现在时中，当主语是thou时，do变为dost。

1-2 spend upon thyself thy beauty's legacy 把美丽这份遗产花在自己身上。

2 legacy 法律术语，遗产。

3 bequest 遗赠
   doth do的屈折变化形式，在一般现在时中，当主语是第三人称单数时，do变为doth。

4 frank 慷慨的
   those are free等于those who are free,are free是定语从句，修饰those,只是定语从句的连接词who被省略了。

5 beauteous beautiful,诗歌用语。

6 bounteous 慷慨的
   largess 赠予物
   give thee to give 以give为中心词的过去分词短语，作定语，修饰前面的largess。

7 usurer 放高利贷的人。

8 a sum of sums 一笔钱
   canst 情态动词can的屈折变化形式，在一般现在时中，但主语是thou时，can变成canst。

9 traffic 名词，交易，贸易
   having traffic with thyself alone 只跟自己做交易。

10 该句的正常语序是Thou dost deceive thy sweet self of thyself。
   of thyself by thyself

14 该行是定语从句，修饰第13行中的beauty,which指前句中beauth。
   used 过去分词，语法上等于条件状语从句if it is used。
   executor 遗嘱的执行人。
   th'executor the executor,把两次缩合在一起是为了避免多一个非重读音节，这是格律的需要。
